First 24 Hours
Allow the hydroseed mulch to dry and “set” before watering. Begin watering the following day. The green color will fade within a few days — this is completely normal.
Weeks 1-2
(Most Important Stage)
Keep the hydroseed consistently moist at all times.
Recommended Watering:
Water 3–4 times per day
Approximately 5–15 minutes per zone
Best times:
Early morning
Late morning
Mid-afternoon
Early evening (only if needed)
Important:
The surface should stay damp like a sponge — NOT muddy.
Do not allow puddles, runoff, or washouts.
Sunny and windy areas will dry out faster and may need extra watering.
Avoid watering late at night to help prevent fungus.
Weeks 3-4
Grass should now be sprouting and beginning to fill in.
Reduce watering to:
2 times per day
Increase watering time slightly to encourage deeper roots.
Goal: Keep soil moist below the surface while allowing the top layer to dry slightly between cycles.
Weeks 5-6
Your lawn should be thickening and rooting deeper.
Water:
Once daily
Longer, deeper watering cycles
After establishment: Transition to a normal lawn watering schedule of approximately 2–3 deep waterings per week, depending on weather conditions.
Mowing
First mow when grass reaches 3–4 inches tall
Use sharp mower blades
Never remove more than 1/3 of the grass height at once
Avoid aggressive turning with the mower on young grass
Important Care Tips
Keep pets and foot traffic off the lawn for at least 4–6 weeks.
Uneven growth is usually caused by uneven watering.
Wind in Laramie can dry hydroseed quickly — monitor moisture daily.
Rain does NOT always mean enough moisture; check the soil before skipping watering.
Full establishment typically takes one growing season.
What to Expect
Germination typically begins in 7–14 days
Thin areas usually fill in over time with proper watering and mowing
Some weed growth is normal in new lawns
